WHY A-MAST?
A-MAST brings together key offshore safety, aviation emergency, sea-survival and emergency-response disciplines within one structured three-day programme.
Participants move from offshore safety awareness into helicopter emergency preparation, CA-EBS familiarisation and simulated escape, followed by sea survival, evacuation and recovery, emergency first aid, firefighting and self-rescue.
The programme combines structured learning with practical exercises designed to build familiarity with offshore emergency equipment, environments and response situations.

Offshore operations can move rapidly from routine activity into complex emergency situations.

A helicopter emergency may lead to ditching, underwater escape, immersion, evacuation and casualty response. An installation emergency may involve fire, smoke, loss of visibility, evacuation or the need to survive at sea until recovery is possible.

A-MAST brings these related emergency competencies together so personnel can develop a broader understanding of how offshore emergencies may evolve and how different survival and response skills connect.

One Integrated Programme for Offshore Emergency Preparedness
A-MAST brings together key offshore safety, aviation emergency, sea-survival and emergency-response disciplines within one structured three-day programme.
Participants move from offshore safety awareness into helicopter emergency preparation, CA-EBS familiarisation and simulated escape, followed by sea survival, evacuation and recovery, emergency first aid, firefighting and self-rescue.
The programme combines structured learning with practical exercises designed to build familiarity with offshore emergency equipment, environments and response situations.

TRAINING STRUCTURE
A-MAST is built around four interconnected areas of offshore emergency preparedness: Safety Induction, Helicopter Safety & Escape, Sea Survival & First Aid, and Firefighting & Self-Rescue. Together, they establish the knowledge and practical familiarity required to understand the offshore operating environment, recognise hazards, prepare for emergency situations and respond appropriately when normal operating conditions deteriorate.
The curriculum moves progressively from offshore safety awareness and hazard control into aviation emergency preparation, survival, recovery and immediate emergency response.
Helicopter Emergency Training forms a major practical component of the programme. Participants first develop familiarity with offshore helicopter travel, emergency procedures and the Compressed Air Emergency Breathing System (CA-EBS) before progressing into in-water familiarisation and simulated helicopter escape exercises.
Environmental effects can be introduced to increase exercise complexity and require participants to maintain orientation, manage equipment and apply the correct escape sequence under progressively more demanding conditions. The training progression follows a deliberate pathway:
Helicopter Travel → Emergency Preparation → CA-EBS → In-Water Familiarisation → Simulated Escape.

A-MAST | 3 Days | Goa | Offshore personnel | Practical training | What it covers
A-MAST is a three-day integrated offshore safety and emergency-response training programme delivered at the ONGC ATI Sea Survival Centre in Goa.
Designed for offshore-going personnel, the programme combines safety induction, helicopter emergency escape with CA-EBS, sea survival, first aid, firefighting and self-rescue and H₂S gas release within a structured framework of learning and practical training environment.
Offshore operations can transition rapidly from routine activity into complex emergency situations. The aim is the enhance the offshore personnel's skills, knowledge, equipment familiarity and practical response capability required when those conditions change.
The programme involves critical trainings in helicopter emergency escape, CA-EBS use, sea survival, first aid, firefighting, self-rescue, Basic H₂S training and TEMPSC operations within one structured survival pathway.
ONGC ATI and Suraksha Marine have in a joint effort designed the AMAST course to meet the realistic situational compass of offshore safety and hazards management. The course stipulates a vast demand for offshore hazard recognition, piloted emergency scenarios and emergency response capabilities beyond theoretical knowledge.
The programme combines offshore safety, helicopter escape techniques, advanced marine survival, first aid, firefighting, and self-rescue within a structured practical training environment.
Participants are trained to develop familiarity with helicopter emergencies and the use of the Compressed Air Emergency Breathing System (CA-EBS), including additional in-water training intended to strengthen equipment familiarity before more demanding simulated escape scenarios are introduced.
Practical helicopter escape exercises are conducted within the Survival Training Simulation Theatre, where environmental effects can be introduced to increase the realism and complexity of the training environment.
Training includes familiarisation with offshore evacuation and recovery arrangements such as standby vessels, Fast Rescue Craft (FRC), Mechanical Rescue and Recovery Devices (MRRD), nets, baskets, ladders, liferafts, and Totally Enclosed Motor Propelled Survival Craft (TEMPSC).

Participants also understand the various response measures and escape techniques in case of fire, gas leak, smoke-filled low visibility areas, confined space, compartments, etc. Learning the types of automated firefighting systems, portable extinguishers, and its checks, monitoring, operation, raising alarm and rescue procedures is vital for broader understanding of offshore safety critical systems and correct emergency response.
A helicopter incident may result in immersion, impact injuries, exposure, or casualties requiring assistance. A fire or evacuation may create smoke inhalation, burns, trauma, or other medical emergencies. Sea-survival situations can introduce hypothermia, exhaustion, and additional complications. First-aid competence therefore becomes part of operational resilience.
The emphasis is on establishing the capability to recognise immediate priorities and take appropriate initial action until the casualty can be transferred to more advanced medical care.
Lastly, the wider scope of A-MAST training manages the inclusion of Basic H₂S training strengthening a broader knowledge on offshore emergencies that are not limited to aviation incidents, fire or survival at sea. Personnel working around hydrocarbon installations must also be prepared for process-related atmospheric hazards. A gas release may occur independently or as part of a wider incident involving equipment failure, loss of containment, fire, evacuation or emergency shutdown.
For this reason, H₂S awareness sits naturally alongside the other emergency competencies developed through A-MAST.
Together, the programme creates a broader preparedness pathway:
RECOGNISE → PROTECT → ESCAPE → SURVIVE → RESPOND
