An eligible in-date OPITO certificate is required.

Three connected areas of further emergency competence.

The Product Standard identifies Product 5929 as open to learners holding a valid, in-date OPITO-approved certificate from eligible BOSIET, Tropical BOSIET, FOET and Tropical FOET pathways, including EBS and recognised CA-EBS variants listed by the Standard​.

The training centre must be able to provide evidence that these prerequisite requirements were satisfied if requested by OPITO.

Further training for personnel already working offshore.

Product 5929 is designed for personnel already working in the offshore industry who require further emergency-response training and will be supplied with a Compressed Air Emergency Breathing System during offshore helicopter travel.

This is not an entry-level offshore  programme.  Product 5929 requires an appropriate valid, in-date OPITO certificate.

It is intended to refresh, practise and demonstrate previously developed emergency-response competencies, particularly those that cannot realistically be rehearsed during routine offshore drills.

Training requirements can vary by operator, region and aviation arrangement.

Before booking, confirm your requirement with your employer, operator or mobilisation team.

01 — OIS-84

Further Helicopter Safety & Escape — Tropical

3 Hours

 

This unit refreshes the practical helicopter emergency and escape skills required for offshore travel.

Learners revisit the actions required when preparing for a helicopter ditching or emergency landing, including brace positions appropriate to different seating locations and restraint systems.

The emphasis then shifts quickly into practical escape.

Learners practise: donning an aviation lifejacket, preparing for helicopter ditching, operating a push-out window, dry evacuation into an aviation liferaft, underwater escape from partial submersion, capsized helicopter escape, lifejacket inflation, spray-visor deployment, in-water survival, liferaft boarding, and offshore rescue.

02 — OIS-276

Helicopter Emergencies & CA-EBS

The CA-EBS unit reconnects the learner with the breathing system that may be supplied during offshore helicopter travel.

Training covers: equipment principles, CA-EBS components, pre-donning checks, correct fitting, one-handed deployment, mouthpiece sealing, water clearing, purge operation, mouthpiece, recovery, demand-valve use and practical shallow-water breathing exercises.

This is not simply an equipment demonstration. The learner must perform the required actions.

03 — OIS-74

Further Firefighting and Self Rescue

2 Hours 35 Minutes

This unit refreshes the practical actions required when fire, smoke and restricted visibility change normal escape conditions.

Learners practise:raising the alarm, operating portable extinguishers, responding to Class A or Class B fires, self-rescue under reduced visibility, self-rescue under completely obscured visibility and small-group escape concluding with muster.

04 — OIS-75

Further Emergency First Aid

1 Hour

The first-aid component refreshes knowledge and immediate response actions learned through previous BOSIET or FOET training.

The Product specifically states that this unit should concentrate on enhancing previous learning, rather than treating the learner as a first-time participant.

Topics include: scene safety, raising the alarm, casualty assessment, airway and breathing, bleeding, burns, chemical exposure, prioritising actions and recognised immediate first-aid practice.

Why the CA-EBS Pathway Matters

Train for the breathing system you may actually use offshore.

Travelling offshore involves a combination of hazards that many personnel may not encounter in conventional workplaces.

The worker must understand the offshore operating environment, recognise major hazards and controls, know how to respond to alarms and emergency instructions, travel safely by helicopter, use aviation survival equipment correctly and respond appropriately if an aircraft ditches. Product 5508 brings these competencies together within one structured initial-training pathway.

The OPITO-defined objectives include identifying offshore hazards and their controls, understanding offshore safety regulation and safety-management principles, demonstrating correct CA-EBS use, completing simulated helicopter emergency and escape exercises, demonstrating sea-survival and first-aid techniques, and using basic firefighting and self-rescue techniques in reduced-visibility environments.

The Product includes dedicated CA-EBS exercises in shallow water at a maximum depth of 0.7 metres measured at the chest.

Learners practice: deployment above the water, deployment below the surface, clearing the mouthpiece by exhalation, using the purge function, deployment using opposite hands, breathing underwater vertically and moving underwater while breathing from CA-EBS.

Train the escape in a controlled helicopter environment.

At Suraksha Marine, HUET practical training is delivered using a purpose-built helicopter underwater escape simulator designed to support controlled submersion, inversion and emergency egress exercises.

Product 5929 requires HUET systems to include representative helicopter seating and restraints, push-out windows, controlled lowering, at least 180° rotation, emergency stopping capability and rapid retrieval.

Swimming Ability

You do not need to hide your swimming ability.

These groups must be clearly
identified during pool exercises.

The standard recognises: swimmers, weak swimmers and designated non-swimmers.

A maximum of two designated non-swimmer learners may participate in any one HUET pool exercise.

Shoulder Breadth Measurement

Where required locally, learners should hold a valid Shoulder Breadth Measurement before offshore helicopter travel.

Shoulder Breadth Measurement may be required depending on the applicable offshore aviation regime. Confirm your mobilisation requirement before booking.

Medical Requirements

Be fit for the practical demands of training.

Product 5929 contains activities that may be physically demanding and potentially stressful.

Learners must satisfy an acceptable

medical-entry route, which may include:

  • valid offshore medical;

  • employer-approved equivalent;

  • fitness-to-work-at-sea certificate;

  • medical fitness for diving at work;

  • or appropriate screening through the OPITO-approved centre.

Medical eligibility should be confirmed before booking.
