Helicopter emergency training for personnel travelling offshore.
Product 5194 is designed for personnel new to, or returning to, the offshore industry who are required to travel by helicopter to an offshore asset or facility and will be supplied with CA-EBS during helicopter travel.
The Product is particularly appropriate when the training requirement is centred on: offshore helicopter travel, CA-EBS, helicopter ditching, underwater escape, and sea survival.
Training requirements can vary by operator, region and aviation arrangement.

Emergency Preparation
Know the escape sequence before the aircraft reaches the water.
Learners develop an understanding of: aircraft flotation characteristics, emergency landing and ditching, escape routes, aviation lifejackets, brace positions, seat and harness configurations, independent action and survival following ditching.

01 — OIS-81
Helicopter Safety and Escape — Tropical
4 Hours 20 minutes
OIS-81 develops the knowledge and practical actions required for offshore helicopter travel and emergency escape in a tropical operating environment.
The unit begins before the emergency itself. Learners develop an understanding of normal offshore helicopter travel requirements including pre-flight briefings, correct dress, documentation, prohibited articles, check-in, safe boarding and in-flight procedures. They also learn when abnormal conditions such as fire, smoke, fuel leakage or other hazards should be reported to the flight crew.
The training then moves into helicopter emergency preparation. Learners develop an understanding of basic aircraft flotation characteristics, escape routes, aviation lifejackets, brace positions, restraint configurations and survival actions following ditching or emergency landing. The evacuation sequence emphasises locating the nominated exit, releasing the restraint at the appropriate stage and evacuating through the required exit or push-out window.


02 — OIS-276
Helicopter Emergencies & CA-EBS
OIS-276 focuses specifically on the Compressed Air Emergency Breathing System (CA-EBS) used during offshore helicopter travel.
The unit develops both technical understanding and practical equipment competence.
Learners first understand the operating principles of CA-EBS and how compressed-air systems differ from other emergency breathing systems used offshore, including rebreather systems.
Learners also understand how CA-EBS interacts with other survival equipment such as the aviation lifejacket and Personal Locator Beacon where applicable.
03 — OIS-83
Sea Survival — THUET
4 Hours
OIS-83 develops the knowledge and practical actions required once a learner has evacuated an offshore installation or escaped into the water.
The unit connects HUET with the wider offshore survival chain:
EVACUATE → SURVIVE → BOARD → GROUP → RESCUE
Learners first develop an understanding of typical offshore emergencies, including those involving floating installations such as FPSOs and drilling rigs, together with station bills, means of escape and actions before, during and after evacuation.

Learners practice: deployment above the water, deployment below the surface, clearing the mouthpiece by exhalation, using the purge function, deployment using opposite hands, breathing underwater vertically and moving underwater while breathing from CA-EBS.

Train the escape in a controlled helicopter environment.
At Suraksha Marine, HUET practical training is delivered using a purpose-built helicopter underwater escape simulator designed to support controlled submersion, inversion and emergency egress exercises.
Product 5194 requires HUET systems to include representative helicopter seating and restraints, push-out windows, controlled lowering, at least 180° rotation, emergency stopping capability and rapid retrieval.

An important assessment detail within the Product Standard is that although push-out windows are fitted for the final capsize exercise, the learner's ability to push out the window is assessed during the partial-submersion exercise.

Aviation Liferaft
Helicopter emergency knowledge: learners cover aviation liferaft stowage, operation, entry and initial actions after boarding.
Product 5194 includes dry evacuation from a simulated ditched helicopter into an aviation liferaft, as well as liferaft boarding from the water following HUET egress.

These groups must be clearly

The standard recognises: swimmers, weak swimmers and designated non-swimmers.
A maximum of two designated non-swimmer learners may participate in any one HUET pool exercise.

Shoulder Breadth Measurement
Where required locally, learners should hold a valid Shoulder Breadth Measurement before offshore helicopter travel.
Shoulder Breadth Measurement may be required depending on the applicable offshore aviation regime. Confirm your mobilisation requirement before booking.
Medical Requirements
Be fit for the practical demands of training.
Product 5194 contains activities that may be physically demanding and potentially stressful.
Learners must satisfy an acceptable
medical-entry route, which may include:

medical fitness for diving at work;

or appropriate screening through the OPITO-approved centre.
Product 5194 requires additional medical fitness for shallow-water CA-EBS exercises. Learners must meet the applicable medical requirements and provide the required declaration; anyone deemed medically unfit must not participate.
